Keeping Up with Rate Increases

Written by Suzi Oswald, Postal Specialist | Aug 26, 2021 3:00:00 PM

Like many things, postage is increasing in cost this year. So that got us wondering: Just how does the U.S. compare to other countries? It turns out we actually pay much less to mail a first-class letter than many other Western nations including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. In Italy, for example, it costs about $3.29 to send a letter. Yet when the increases kick in here on August 29, we’ll still pay just 58 cents.

Of course, while seeing those comparisons is interesting, we know our clients want (and need!) to get the most out of their postage. So we’re always looking for ways to find efficiencies while making sure direct mail campaigns stand out in the mailbox.

As you’re thinking about your next project, check out our new Postal Rates Chart for an overview of common rates.

One of the most notable changes is for non-machinable letters. The first-class surcharge rate has increased from 20 cents to 30 cents. We’ll keep an eye on additional changes – and some great promotions from the USPS – in our upcoming Inside the Mailbag blog posts.

Wondering how to make the most of your mailing budget? Want to know how these changes might impact your projects? We’d love to talk.
